CREATIVE COMMONS

Do you know that artwork and music on internet is the property of the creator and you can't use it without permission? The above poster created lots of publicity for the artist, Shepard Fairey, and lots of legal problems.
"The Associated Press says it believes the photo that inspired artist Shepard Fairey's celebrated "Hope" poster of Barack Obama is AP property, and Fairey is guilty of infringement. The AP is in talks with Fairey’s attorney.

"The Associated Press has determined that the photograph used in the poster is an AP photo and that its use required permission,” AP spokesperson
Paul Colford said in a written statement issued February 4. “AP safeguards its assets and looks at these events on a case-by-case basis. We have reached out to Mr. Fairey's attorney and are in discussions. We hope for an amicable solution." (Photo District News)

Do you know the copyright laws? There is a solution called Creative Commons. At their site you can watch a video and learn about the law. You also can search for images and music to use without having to ask permission.

THE FOURTH PLINTH

Beginning July 6th, 2009 the Fourth Plinth in the north west of Trafalgar Square is home to Antony Gormley's One & Other, an astonishing living monument. He is asking the people of the UK to occupy the empty Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, a space normally reserved for statues of Kings and Generals, in an image of themselves, and a representation of the whole of humanity.

The plinth is being occupied by different people every hour, 24 hours a day, for 100 days.  "The Fourth Plinth" is being webcast live 24 hours a day until October 14th. Everyday, every hour a different person will participate in this art event.

ArtRage

ArtRage is a painting software package for Windows or Macs.
The complete version is $25 but the free version  has lots of the same features.    "With ArtRage you can paint with oils, sketch with pencils, sprinkle sparkling glitter and much more. Stencils and rulers let you create precise shapes or smooth curves and straight lines freehand. Tracing and Reference images let you load photos to recreate as paintings either by eye or by letting ArtRage select colors for you as you paint. For professional users, ArtRage offers Layers, Layer Groups and Layer Blend Modes compatible with the PSD file format.

Best of all, ArtRage doesn't force you to learn complex tool settings, it lets you get right down to painting with tools you already know how to use."

The site also provides free tutorials, forums and critiques.  Try it out the free version, post your picture on your blog and write about what you think.
